Pet Etiquette

We’ve all met them, the dog owners who don’t seem to care about anyone’s comfort but their and their dog’s.  They’re the ones who let their dog leave a mess on the sidewalk or stand by while their pup barks at kids and bowls over old ladies.  But even if you have higher standards for your dog than this, how can you be sure you’re following all the rules of pet etiquette?  After all, if you like to take your dog everywhere you go—on camping trips, road trips, rides in the RV, and trips into town—you already have a vested interest in having a dog that’s welcome wherever it goes.  Take a minute to brush up on your skills, and you’ll be well versed in what is and isn’t appropriate in the pet world.

Help your Pets Beat The Heat PDF Print E-mail

The dog days of summer are upon us! This is the month when summer celebrates its glory, bringing us warm, lazy days. If you're traveling with your pet this summer, it's important that you take a few key steps to keep your dog or cat comfortable, even when the mercury rises.

Dogs and cats overheat more easily than people do. Where we have sweat glands to cool ourselves, dogs and cats only sweat from their noses and foot pads. And since the rest of their bodies are covered in fur, heat can be a real problem. Puppies, older pets, and short-nosed breeds (pugs, bulldogs, boxers, and Persian cats) are especially susceptible to heat-related stress.

Camping Tips for Pet Parents

I’m always amazed at the variety and number of pets I see at campgrounds around the country. It’s not at all unusual to see 2, 3, or more dogs pile out of any size rig these days. It’s obvious that today’s camping vacations are not complete without Fido, Fluffy or Tweety. I’ve even seen ferrets, geckos, and yes, snakes!! Let’s face it, your pet – four legged or a belly crawler - is a member of the family and likely loves to camp as much as you do. Most private RV parks and campgrounds welcome your pet; however, some parks may restrict certain breeds and/or sizes of dogs or set a maximum number of pets allowed per campsite. Many state and national parks do not allow pets. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to make sure your non-human family member (however human they may seem) will be a welcome guest.

Four Paws on the Trail - Buster Goes hiking PDF Print E-mail

Finally, finally – we’re at the trailhead! All week long, Joey’s been taking me out after dinner to walk around the neighborhood with Mom and Dad. Dad calls these “shake-down hikes.” He wears a pack and leather boots, and says we should all notice anything that rubs us the wrong way. Nothing rubs me the wrong way when I’m walking, I’m glad to report! I loved those trots around the block, but Joey said I’d love our hike even more. That does seem likely since I love things that involve the RV almost as much as I love beef jerky.
